Beauty and the Beast

Turning inland from San Blas, we started climbing into the Sierra Madre and caught our first glimpses of the volcanoes that characterise this whole area. We were told that the colonial towns in the mountains were stunning and we were not disappointed.

After 5 days of "Autopista", traversing mostly agricultural land, we arrived in the town of Zamora, home to the Torre Reforma, the world 14th largest cathedral. The Plaza Grande with its central Band Stand and another beautiful cathedral was truly the heart of the city. A few days of markets, cultural sights and good coffee revealed to us the true spirit of inland Mexico. Heading south out of Zamora towards the lake of Patzcuaro, we stopped off at the tiny national park of the Lago de Camecuaro, an interesting natural lake bordered by trees on most of its circumference, the roots of which created the edge the lake.

Another few miles down the road but up the hill, we came across the sight we had been trying to avoid, a garbage dump site in the middle of the mountains. We knew that waste disposal in central america is a big issue, that is nowhere near being resolved but the location of this dump site could not have provided a stronger contrast. It seems that the concept of "put of sight, out of mind" would be the main principle for waste disposal in this area.

It is a shame that the beautiful sights in the area belongs to the past whereas the eyesores are all products of our present lifestyle and over-consumption.

Definitely food for thought.
