Surf, sand and Sea Bream

After several months of cold weather, we thought it only fair to treat ourselves to a little beach time, basking in the sun and providing an "all you can eat buffet" for the sand flies and mosquitoes that have made San Blas nationally infamous. This is one of the few times on the trip that we are actually hoping for wind to give us a little respite from the clouds of bugs that automatically gravitate towards the new Gringos.

Spending 2 days on the beach, we decided that it would be a perfect place to spend Christmas and thus prolonged our stay to 5 days, giving us a little more time off the bikes and a bit more time get pummeled by the Pacific waves. The beach is popular with the Mexicans and the restaurants lining the coast filled up during the day but early in the morning and after 5 pm, the beach was all ours to enjoy.  

It seems to be customary to buy all fresh produce in the morning in Mexico, so our efforts of getting dinner at 5pm were somewhat thwarted causing us to engage on a 2 hr hunt for fresh fish, leading us out of town to a small fishing port in the backwaters of the mangroves. After what seemed like miles of dirt roads, we finally arrived to find several small boats unloading the last catch of the day, enormous Sea Breams. Ten minutes later we were cycling away with two huge fillets and only a few dollars out of pocket. Add a few tortillas, refried beans and salsa and diner is served...
